The School of Law at Queen Mary is academic department specialising in teaching and research in all major fields of law. The Queen Mary School of Law is one of six law schools in the federal University of London. It is firmly established as a centre of national and international excellence in legal study and research. The School is ranked seventh in the England and third in London for Law, based on the percentage of our staff rated 3* & 4* (4* being the highest) in the UK government 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, denoting research excellence of international importance. The academic staff are actively involved in public affairs in the UK, European institutions and international bodies, and have leading roles in legal scholarship. They have close links with law firms and leading members of the law professions in the UK and overseas. Some are involved in our teaching and others support students and activities within the school.

Dr. Prakash Shah will work on the United Kingdom as a case study with specific emphasis on the relationships between policies, legislation and case law and their collective impact on the British-born South Asian population. He has appeared in court as an expert witness and writes expert reports for legal proceedings concerning South Asian laws and ethnic minorities in Britain. He has been advisor to the Law Commission of England and Wales. He is also the moderator of e-mail group ‘Pluri-legal’ (http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/PLURI-LEGAL) concerned with accommodation by European legal systems of ethnic, religious and diasporic minorities. He has organised several academic conferences, specifically a series of expert workshops on religious arbitration in 2008. Dr. Shah will lead WP2, Theoretical Framework, he will be member of WP3, The Family, focusing on the case study of the Shari’a question in Britain, of WP7, Fieldwork, and of WP8, Communication and Dissemination for Policy Optimisation.
